Introduction

Alec Williams is a trainer, speaker and storyteller with a mission to get more children reading!  With a background in children’s books, libraries and literacy, Alec travels all over the UK and overseas, enthusing audiences with stories and poetry, giving training and talks, presenting and compering events, and providing advice and consultancy.

This page includes three biographies for use with adults, two biographies for use with children, and some high resolution photographs of Alec that can be used for publicity purposes.

Biographies for Adults

Below are three biographies, of varying size, any of which may be used.  They include the whole range of Alec’s work, not just his storytelling.  They can be slightly abridged, but any additional material should be agreed with Alec.

Alec Williams [317 words]

Alec Williams works independently as a storyteller, trainer, consultant, writer and speaker.  Alec has always been an enthusiast for children’s reading, and his many years’ experience managing library services to children and education in the UK have given him an extensive knowledge of children’s books, and an appreciation of the power of stories.

In 1999, Alec left the post of Head of Children's Services for Leeds Libraries, and has since worked freelance, developing a reputation both for his entertaining public speaking, his lively training sessions, and for storytelling and poetry work with children.  In the course of his work, Alec has written articles, spoken to national conferences, and been featured on radio and television in the UK.  He has contributed to publications from CILIP (formerly the UK Library Association), and in 1999 was made an Honorary Member of its Youth Libraries Group.

Alec’s storytelling work is informed by a background in libraries, literacy, reading and children’s books – all areas in which he also trains – and he is also well known for inspirational talks on the importance of reading for children and young people.  His training courses have been delivered to teachers, parents, school librarians, public library staff, early years workers, and many other audiences.  His consultancy role currently includes work for the British Council, the UK’s Museums, Libraries and Archives Council, and UK schools.

Alec is a past Chair of the UK’s School Library Association, and frequently works with school librarians throughout the country.  He is also very active in performance work with all ages of children, from Early Years, Primary and Secondary schools, public libraries, museums, and other venues.  Alec’s training and storytelling work has taken him to over thirty countries around the world.  His performance work includes traditional stories from many countries, along with poetry and contemporary book promotion, and he’s worked in schools, libraries, museums, old people’s homes, shopping centres – and outdoors, in parks!
