Alec's Words

This page contains examples of poetry written by Alec with children, during school visits, along with one or two examples of his own poetry.

Poetry written with children

As part of his poetry sessions in schools, Alec sometimes writes collaborative poems with children, starting with an ideas session, then collecting possible rhymes, and other ingredients.  The resulting poems are unique to particular schools, with references to recent events – a trip to the seaside, for example!  They have usually been performed by the children either to the rest of the school, or to an audience of parents.

One school who has regularly invited Alec to write poetry with their children is Littlemoor Children’s Centre and School, in Askern near Doncaster.  Below are two examples of poetry written with Year 2 children at Littlemoor (both are PDF files and require Adobe Reader or similar):

Alec also worked with school children in central Doncaster to produce a poem about Arthur Wharton, the UK’s first black professional footballer.  A PDF version is below, or see the Football Unites, Racism Divides (FURD) website, for more information about Arthur, and a downloadable copy of Alec’s poem.

Alec’s Poetry

With all the storytelling and speaking he does, Alec doesn’t have much free time, but below are two samples of his own poems, this time for older children.  Watch this space… there may be more coming! Both are PDF files and require Adobe Reader or similar.
